The Orchid Isle Orchestra will perform classical and holiday favorites at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in Hilo.

String students start the concert with ensemble music featuring violin, cello, viola, and piano. The program continues with music played by the Orchid Isle Youth Orchestra, which combines talent from four Hawaii Island teaching studios with players from the community.

The program includes works from three concerti: music from Kabalevsky’s Piano Concerto No. 3, performed by Alden Young and his teacher, Gloria Mendoza-Watson; the Corelli Christmas Concerto, performed by soloists Alden Young, Feather Wakefield (violins), Kaleo Jack (cello) and the Orchid Isle Orchestra (OIO); the second movement of the Bach Double Violin Concerto, performed by violin soloists Ansel Weber and Alden Young, with the OIO.

The OIO will perform arrangements of Winter Wonderland, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Jingle Bell Rock, and Stompin’ On the Housetop (a foot-stomping piece).

The public is invited. The concert is free, but donations are accepted to help pay for program expenses. Call Cathy Young at 982-9307 for more information.
